A box to remember
A box sits in the existing plaza, a space created by existing elements put in order by a purpose
A box silently plays with sunlight calling for attention
A box created by a self-standing light metal structure made of pools and roof
“… as the sand which is on the seashore…”
Four gravel pools create the podium. The rhythmic sound of each step on the irregular surface creates a new space, deaf to the external world for bits of time and isolates the mind. Light and shadow run together through the box modular and structural roof, giving different shades to walls and pools, making time visible. The surrounding shapes of shadows accompany and guide thoughts, helping an interior journey begin. The light self-standing structure formally blends with the surrounding elements but creates a new structurally weight balanced and independent structure. Perforated panels softly touch the edge of the existing walls creating a continuum between the new box structure vertical elements of the plaza. A technical room, respecting the required distance from the existing ventilation system, finds place on each side of the new structure facing the existing walls.
“…and thou shalt make a mercy seat of pure gold…”
A bronze seat runs from side to side of the box becoming the turning point of the physical journey in the box. A decision is to be made, to be stopped by a physical obstacle and sit with grieve or to cross the block, looking towards a new beginning. The memories recalled by the ambient, and so our mood, will determine the experience of the box. The seating moment symbolizes the awareness of the moment.
“… i stand by the well of water…”
A reflecting pool is the physical limit of the box. A controlled environment offers the opportunity to be in a protected space where the inception of the thinking process starts. The depth of view is controlled by a green belt, which hides the actual fencing system, and the reflection of the sky. The green belt and water enclose the memorial area creating two main facades.
